It’s 10 PM Sunday night on the last day of the month. How far have you progressed on your latest textual masterpiece? Come on fess up. No one else is listening…Did you pen the number of pages you committed to?
What’s that? Work has been crazy. There's friends to visit and family obligations. The kids are in the middle of sports, dance…There’s homework to be checked, dinner to fix and laundry piled high.
You swear that tomorrow will be better, life will open up, and rather than swallowing your writing dreams more free time will emerge. So you reset writing goals, scratch out a fresh to-do list, and promise to begin anew. Sound familiar?
It’s okay. There’s still no one else listening. So who are you hurting? Only the person who rests at the helm navigating the direction of your future…You!
Here are 3 antidotes to cure detour and distraction
1. Fight – Life is a battle of wills. Yours, against the iron clad universal forces that threaten priorities, plans, and your purpose. Resolve to fight through, around, and over top of technology challenges, comfort zone fears, daily interruptions, and what other people say can’t be done. Set your goals and etch out a pictorial map of your dreams but accept now that the accomplishment of your dreams comes down to the primal act of fighting for it.
2. Just say No! – This tiny little word may gain you frowns but ultimately it will result in more yes’s, so don’t be afraid to use it. It’s easy to get lured in multiple directions. You need to stay focused on the roads that lead you to your desired destination.
3. Action vs Goals – Have you ever written out a perfect set of amazing goals that are destined to create an enviable future, only to abandon them a few weeks or months later? How far past reading did you get to realizing your destiny?
Setting goals can be a daunting endeavor that causes you to procrastinate and even feel like you’re chasing what you desire. It becomes this monumental hurdle of, before you can make a move on anything you need to develop this organized arrangement accounting for every pocket of your life over the next 6 months, 1 year, 5 years…That’s enough to shut down the right brain and stifle progress.
Before I get hammered by the goal setting experts out there, I’m not saying don’t do them. But for some artists, the challenge with goals before action is that it takes longer to reap the rewards of productivity. Action is a turbo boost that propels you toward completion, which instills confidence. Goals are long-term fuel, which encourage continued performance. It takes both but there’s no one size fits all when it comes to the order of achievement.
Make a list of the tasks you need to do to complete one of your current writing projects. Immediately do something on that list. Now, you’re in the game. Goals are never ending so in between accomplishing tasks let your mind go and jot down every aspiration your heart desires.
Sometimes internalizing another author’s words helps you organize your thoughts, gain motivation, and spin it into momentum to help you proliferate your words out to a world who’s waiting to hear what you have to say!
